If my math is correct, then I believe the JD Group brought home 9 gold medals, 13 silver medals and 9 bronze medals. An impressive medal haul – well done athletes!

Many JD athletes rose to the challenge and recorded at least one personal best performance during the meet: Nicholas(200m), Matthew Springer (long jump), Alex McDuffie (200m), Abtin (100m), Matthew Schalm (javelin), Tyler(100m), Alex Charlesworth (150m), Katie (2000m), Lauren Garnett (100m), Antha (200m), Lauren Fridman(javelin), Siri (shot put), Rhea (shot put), Mia (150m) and Heather (150m). Several athletes recorded personal bests in more than one of their individual events: Rui (100mH, 200mH), Patrick (100mH, 200mH), Brent Stephen (long jump, shot put), Eric (800m, 1200m, discus, javelin), Ellie (200m, long jump), Kendall (200m, high jump, long jump),Emily (80mH, 200mH), Delainy (150m, 800m, 1200m, shot put), Dana (150m, shot put, long jump, javelin), Anna(80m, 150m), Emma Martin (80m, 150m, discus) and Madelaine (80m, javelin). It isn’t easy with the travel and the pressure of an important meet to compete at your best, so congratulations to all of you for achieving a personal best.

Austin’s very impressive results of two gold medals, one silver medal and three bronze medals earned him a place on both Team Alberta that will represent the province at Legion Nationals in Ottawa in August and on the provincial team that will challenge Manitoba and Saskatchewan at the Western Canadian Midget and Youth Championships in Winnipeg at the end of July. Austin was one of only five midget men and twelve Alberta midget athletes selected to compete at Legion Nationals. Well done Austin!

Ellie’s 2nd place finish in the midget 300m along with her time of 42.15s, which she had achieved at the CALTAF Classic and which beat the 42.45s standard required to go to Legion Nationals, earned her spot on Team Alberta for Legion Nationals in Ottawa. Ellie was one of only seven midget women and twelve Alberta midget athletes selected to compete at Legion Nationals. Ellie also earned a place on the team that will travel to Winnipeg for the Western Canadian Midget and Youth Championships. In addition to her 2nd place finish in the 300m, Ellie was 3rd of twenty-two athletes in the long jump with a personal best jump of 4.48m, 4th of twenty-seven athletes in the 200m, where she recorded a personal best of 27.50s, and 6th of twenty-five athletes in the 100m. Well done Ellie!

There were 28 Alberta midget athletes (16 women, 12 men) selected to the team that will represent Alberta at the Western Canadian Midget and Youth Championships in Winnipeg and four of them are from the JD Group. Congratulations to Austin, Ellie, Katie and Nicholas. I am looking forward to traveling to Winnipeg with you as a coach for Team Alberta. Other CALTAF athletes who will travel to Winnipeg with the team are Adrianne Erdmanfrom the Middle/Long Distance Group, and Alex Bymoen, Allison Stephen and Nicole Squires from Power and Speed. Kendall, as the winner of the high jump competition, was offered a place on the team but was unable to accept.

Multiple medal winner Nicholas earned his spot on Team Alberta for the Midget/Youth Championships by finishing 3rdin both the 100m and 200m. His performance in the 200m preliminary, which was a personal best 24.76s, was remarkable given that Nicholas was still recovering from an earlier and nasty fall in the 100m hurdles, which left him with many deep scratches and puncture wounds from his spikes. Congratulations Nicholas!

Katie’s impressive performance in the 2000m, where she finished in 7:20.93s, a personal best of just under twenty seconds, earned her the silver medal and a place on Team Alberta for the Midget/Youth Championships. Katie also finished 6th in the 1200m and 7th in the 800m and led her team off with a great start in the 4x400m relay, helping to assure them of the silver medal. Well done Katie!
