JD Results from Calgary Hershey Meet

Report from coach Robin:

Hello athletes and parents!

Congratulations to all of the athletes – Alex, Amelia, Andrew, Anna, Annette, Cole, Grace C, Grace L, John, Kevin, Lisa, Molly, Patrick, Phillip, Robin, Thomas and Vienna – who competed at the Calgary Hershey Meet yesterday. Among them, these seventeen JD athletes produced some outstanding results. I would especially like to congratulate Grace L and Robin, who were competing in their first meet. I thought you both competed very well, and Robin even managed to qualify for Hershey Provincials – well done new athletes!

As those of you who were at the meet will know, the results posted at the meet were a little disorganized, difficult to read, and some results were missing altogether. For these reasons, while I will acknowledge what I think were PBs in this email, I will not be recording any PBs from this meet in my official PB charts nor using them as part of the JD Awards criteria or as seed times for future meets. I have contacted the meet director to try to get the results that were not posted at the meet. This information is needed to confirm which athletes have qualified to compete at Hershey Provincials in Edmonton on Saturday 22 June. I know I am missing some ball throw results and Patrick’s 800m.

In the meantime, if you know you have qualified for Hershey Provincials by placing in the top four in any of your events (including the relay) at the Calgary Hershey meet, then you need to go online and register for Hershey Provincials. The link is below. Please note that CALATAF does not travel to Hershey Provincials as a team. Parents are responsible for getting their athlete to and from Edmonton and for booking a hotel room for them. Blair and I will be traveling to Hershey Provincials and have booked rooms at the meet hotel, which is the Delta Edmonton South Hotel and Conference Centre. Be certain to tell the staff at the hotel that you are attending the meet so that you receive the meet rate.

Link to the Hershey Provincials website (go to this link to register): Note that you must register online for Hershey Provincials no later than 18th June.

Here are some meet highlights:

Our 4x100m relay teams ran very well, with both easily winning their races. The ladies team of Vienna to Grace C to Amelia to Molly placed 1st of three teams in 56.76s, while the men’s team of John to Alex to Cole to Thomas finished 1st of four teams in 52.36s. Well done relay runners! We’ll keep working on those exchanges!

The following athletes have qualified for Hershey Provincials, by placing in the top four in at least one of their events (I am still missing some results, so my apologies to those athletes who are erroneously left off this list, or to those whose list of events is incomplete): Alex (800m, SLJ, 4x100m), Lisa (100m, 200m, ball throw),  Annette (800m, 1600m), Cole (800m, ball throw, 4x100m),Molly (100m, 4x100m), Amelia (SLJ, 4x100m), Vienna (100m, 4x100m), Grace C (200m, 4x100m), Thomas (100m, ball throw, 4x100m), John (200m, 4x100m), Phillip (200m, 800m), Kevin (1600m), Patrick (400m), Kamila (800m, 1600m), and Robin (SLJ). Note that, at Provincials, athletes only compete in events that they finished in the top four at the Calgary meet.

In the boys’ 13-14 years 800m, Alex, Cole and Phillip finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively in a field of fourteen athletes, which qualifies them to compete in this event at Hershey Provincials. Alex ran a 1.28s personal best of 2:24.13s while, in that same race, Kevin ran a 4.39 PB of 2:42.20s to finish ninth. Well done boys!

Lisa’s list of impressive accomplishments just keeps getting longer and longer. At this meet, Lisa won both the 11-12 years 100m and 200m, and was also 2nd in the ball throw, thereby qualifying for Hershey Provincials in all of her events. Well doneLisa!

In the girls’ 13-14 years 800m, 13-year-old Annette placed 2nd of fourteen athletes in 2:35.13s to qualify for Hershey Provincials. In that same race, Anna finished not far off her personal best to place eight.  Annette was also 3rd in the 1600m, while Anna was 5th. Well done ladies!

In the girls’ 13-14 years 100m, Vienna placed 1st of twenty athletes in 14.18s, while Molly was not far behind, finishing 2nd in 14.33s. In that same race, Amelia was 5th in 15.11s, while Robin was 10th and Grace L was 12th of twenty athletes. Well done ladies!

In the boys’ 13-14 years 100m, Thomas finished 1st of fourteen athletes in 12.84s, qualifying to compete at Hershey Provincials. In that same race, John was 5th and Andrew was 10th. Well done boys!

In the 200m, Grace set a goal of trying to run under 30s for the first time. Grace took more than half a second off her personal best to finish 1st of fourteen athletes in 29.76s. Mission accomplished and then some! Well done Grace!

Ryan was at the meet moving about on crutches and wearing an impressive full-leg brace. Ryan took a nasty fall at his local playground on the weekend, and suffered a deep gash to his knee that required over 30 stitches. We wish you a speedy recoveryRyan, and look forward to your return.

Congratulations athletes! I will look forward to watching you compete at the Hershey Provincial Championships.

At a recent school meet, Vienna won all of her events – the 100m, sprint hurdles and long jump (with a very impressive jump of 4.55 metres) – and helped her team win the relay. Well done Vienna!

I will see you all later today at Foothills. Robin
