JD Results from Indoor Provincials

Hello athletes and parents!

Congratulations to Adeem, Andrew, Annette, Ben, Cam, ColeCorrina, Deia, Ella, Hanna, John, Kamila, Kevin, Kiannah,Lauren, Lisa, Madeline, Mehrdad, Sarah, and Vienna, who competed at the Provincial Indoor Track and Field Championships in Edmonton this past weekend. Among them, these twenty athletes produced some outstanding results.

Once again, the JD athletes rose to the occasion. There were 40 personal best performances (PBs), with Mehrdad leading the way with an exceptional 8 personal bests (60m preliminary, 60m semi-final, 60m final, 60m hurdles preliminary, 60m hurdles final, 300m, triple jump, high jump). Adeem recorded an outstanding 5 personal bests (60m, long jump, med ball throw, high jump, shot put), while Sarah (60m preliminary, 60m semi-final, 300m), John (60m preliminary, 60m semi-final, long jump) and Vienna (60m preliminary, 300m, long jump) each recorded an impressive 3 personal bests. Madeline (800m, 1200m), Hanna (long jump, weight throw), Deia (60m, 60m hurdles), Lisa (600m, long jump), Ben (300m, 800m) and Andrew (60m, 600m) achieved personal bests in two events, while Ella (200m), Kiannah (weight throw), Corrina (800m), Cam (1200m), Annette (800m) and Cole (800m) each accomplished a personal best in one event. Well done athletes!

Two JD athletes set new provincial records. In the 2000m, first-year midget and JD captain Corrina finished in a very impressive 6:59.13s, beating the provincial record for 14-year-olds of 7:02.60s by 3.47s. With her time, Corrina met the standard of 7:10.00s required to compete at Legion Nationals. Corrina has now met the Legion standard in both the 1200m and 2000m.Corrina placed 1st of nine midget athletes in the 2000m to win the gold medal. Congratulations Corrina – new provincial record holder for 14-year-olds in the 2000, Provincial Champion and gold medalist. An exceptional accomplishment, especially for a first-year athlete! Well done Corrina!

In the 1200m, first-year midget and JD captain Kamila finished in a very impressive 3:46.35s, beating the provincial record for 15-year-old girls of 3:49.06s by 2.71s, and setting a new provincial record for 14-year-olds, beating that record of 3:51.53s by 5.18s. With her time of 3:46.35s, Kamila met the standard of 3:56.00s required to compete at Legion Nationals. Kamila finished 2nd of twenty-four athletes to capture the silver medal. CongratulationsKamila – new provincial record holder for 14-year-old girls in the 1200m and provincial silver medalist. An outstanding accomplishment. Well done Kamila!

In the midget women’s weight throw, JD athletes captured the gold and silver medals. First-year midget Hanna finished 1st of four athletes with a throw of 10.41m, a personal best throw of almost one metre. Congratulations Hanna – provincial champion and gold medalist in the weight throw. Kiannah finished 2nd with a throw of 6.77m, a personal best of 24cm. Well done Kiannah – provincial silver medalist in the weight throw. Well done ladies!

JD captain Annette enjoyed another outstanding meet, capturing the provincial bronze medal in Sunday’s bantam multiple event.Annette finished 3rd overall of thirty-one athletes in the multiple event, by placing 2nd in the 800m, 3rd in the 60m hurdles, 11th in the high jump and 24th in the shot put.  Annette finished the 800m in 2:35.69s, an outstanding time for a bantam and a personal best of 6.83s. In Saturday’s multiple event, Annettefinished 5th overall of forty-three athletes, placing 3rd in the 600m, 4th in the long jump, 12th in the 60m, and 15th in the med ball throw. Congratulations Annette – provincial bronze medalist in Sunday’s bantam multiple event. Well done!

At every meet, there seems to be one athlete who has a break-through moment and, at this meet, it was Madeline. In her distance events, Madeline went out with new confidence and determination, and it showed in her results. In the 800m,Madeline shattered her personal best, finishing in 2:41.81s, a personal best by an amazing 17.41s – and this after she had run the 2000m earlier in the day. In the 1200m, Madeline finished in 4:17.50s, a personal best by 2.37s. Congratulations Madeline – that is the best I have seen you run! Well done!

One of the gutsiest performances of the weekend came from first-year midget Cam who, despite fighting the flu all weekend, was able to take 10.69s off her personal best in the 1200m, where she finished in 4:19.24s. Well done Cam! I hope you are feeling better.

Mehrdad had an outstanding weekend, achieving personal bests in almost all of his events. Mehrdad was one of only three first-year midgets to qualify for the 60m final. In the preliminary, Mehrdadfinished 13th of twenty-six athletes in a personal best 8.00s to qualify for the semi-final. In the next round, Mehrdad ran another personal best, finishing 8th of sixteen athletes in 7.95s. In the final, Mehrdad again ran a personal best, finishing 7th in 7.93s. In the 60m hurdles preliminaries, Mehrdad qualified for the final in a personal best time of 9.69s. In the 60m hurdles final, Mehrdadagain ran a personal best, finishing just out of the medals in 4thplace in 9.66s. Mehrdad was 1st of the 1st-year midgets in the hurdles final. In the triple jump, Mehrdad added 14cm to his PB, clearing 10.59m to finish first. Unfortunately, because there were only two athletes in the event, a gold medal was not awarded. In the high jump, Mehrdad just missed the medals, finishing 4th with a 15cm personal best jump of 1.45m. Mehrdad was also 4th of eleven midget athletes in the long jump, where he cleared 5.03m. Finally, in the 300m, Mehrdad was 2nd of the 1st-year midgets and 4th overall of twenty-one athletes, finishing in 40.98s, a personal best by 1.87s. Phew!! Congratulations Mehrdad – an outstanding effort and impressive results for a first-year midget! Well done!

First-year midget John had an excellent weekend, finishing 9th of twenty-four athletes in the 60m preliminary in a personal best 8.04s. In the semi-final, John again ran a personal best, finishing in 8.02s. In the long jump, John added 18cm to his personal best, clearing 4.93m to finish 5th of eleven athletes. CongratulationsJohn – those are impressive results for a first-year midget competing in a talented field of midget athletes. Well done!

Sarah enjoyed a very successful weekend. In the 60m preliminary, Sarah ran a personal best 8.43s to qualify 9th in a huge field of fifty-three athletes for the semi-final. In the next round, Sarah ran another personal best, finishing 5th of twenty-four athletes and qualifying for the final in 8.34s. In the final,Sarah finished 6th in 8.37s. Sarah also ran a personal best in the 300m, where she finished in 47.95s. Well done Sarah! What a great meet!

In the midget women’s 800m, first-year midget Corrina finished 6th of twenty-three athletes in 2:31.01s, a personal best of 5.65s.Corrina just missed the medals in the 1200m, finishing 4th of twenty-four athletes in 3:55.23s. Well done Corrina – excellent results for a first-year midget!

First-year midget Vienna achieved a personal best in all of the events that she had competed in previously. In the 60m preliminary, Vienna ran a personal best 8.66s to finish 13th in a large field of fifty-three athletes and qualify for the semi-final. In the next round, Vienna again ran 8.66s and just missed qualifying for the final, finishing 14th of twenty-four athletes. In the 300m,Vienna took just shy of 5 seconds off her PB while, in the long jump, Vienna added 4cm to her PB, clearing 4.37m to finish 9th of thirty-five athletes. In her first attempt at the 60m hurdles, and faced with a talented field of second-year midgets, Vienna ran very well and finished 12th of twenty-three athletes in 11.06s. Congratulations Vienna – outstanding results for a first-year midget. Well done!

First-year bantam Lisa had another outstanding meet, finishing an impressive 6th of forty-three athletes in Saturday’s bantam multiple event. Lisa was 3rd in the long jump, where she cleared a personal best 4.03m (by 66cm), 6th in the 60m, 12th in the med ball throw, and 23rd in the 600m, where she ran a 7.5s personal best. In Sunday’s multiple event, Lisa was 5th of twenty-five athletes in the 60m hurdles and 9th of twenty-one athletes in the shot put. Well done Lisa – very impressive, especially for a first-year athlete.

In addition to her gold medal in the weight throw, first-year midget Hanna added just shy of half a metre (48cm) to her personal best in the long jump, where she cleared 4.52m to finish 5th of thirty-five athletes. Well done Hanna – great jumping!

With each meet, bantam Adeem gets stronger and stronger, with a string of personal best performances. This meet was no exception, with Adeem achieving five personal bests. In the shot put, Adeem added just shy of half a metre (41cm) to his PB with a throw of 8.34m, which placed him 7th of twenty-seven athletes. In the high jump, Adeem added 5cm to his personal best, clearing 1.20m. In the long jump, Adeem improved his outdoor 2012 PB by more than half a metre (61cm) and, in the med ball throw, a personal best throw of 4.89m placed him 8th of thirty-six athletes. Finally, just to prove that it is not only in the field events that he is becoming stronger, Adeem also ran a personal best in the 60m. Well done Adeem – an impressive list of PBs!

Not many athletes had run the 200m prior to this meet, but Ellahad run it earlier in the season and she took full advantage, taking more than half a second off her personal best. Well done Ella!

Deia’s best performance of the weekend came in the 60m hurdles, where she took half a second off her personal best. Well done Deia!

First-year midget Cole ran a strong 800m, finishing in 2:28.46s – a personal best of 7.22s. In his first triple jump competition, Colecleared just under ten metres – a very good first effort, especially given how little training he had done in the event. Well done Cole!

Ben ran personal bests in both the 300m and 800m. His last race was his best, with Ben taking 3.85s off his personal best in the 800m. Well done Ben!

Bantam Andrew demonstrated that he is becoming stronger, particularly in the running events, recording personal bests in both the 60m and 600m, where he took 2.9s off his personal best. Well done Timbit!

I observed many acts of good sportsmanship over the weekend, but I especially appreciated Kamila, Cam, Corrina andMadeline’s attempts to make new athlete Kevin feel welcome in the group and comfortable at his first out-of-town meet, and Camand Corrina’s care of Madeline after her 2000m. As the weekend progressed, I also came to appreciate Andrew’s cheery disposition and perpetual smile. Well done ladies and Timbit!

The athletes and coaches would like to thank parent Marcy Mintz,who gave up her weekend to accompany the team as chaperone. We appreciate the long hours that you worked on our behalf, and are most grateful for your assistance. I would also like to thank parent and physiotherapist extraordinaire Mary Anne Dunlop for looking after the athletes all weekend – your helpful advice and taping skills were very much appreciated. Thank you also to the parents who traveled to Edmonton to cheer on the athletes – we are most grateful for your continued support and encouragement. Thank you all!
