JD Highlights from the Dino Opener

Report from Robin:

First, thank you to the parents who somehow managed to get all of the JD athletes to the university. I honestly expected to have to scratch several of the relay teams. I appreciate your support and willingness to get your children to the track despite the appalling road conditions.

Congratulations to all of the JD athletes – Brent B, Nicholas, Charlie, Aidan, Matthew, Brent S, Connor, Michael, Patrick, Sean, Max, Ben, Sofia B, Katie, Jasmine, Lauren G, Ellie, Maria, Jessica, Melissa, Antha, Lauren F, Chase, Emily, Delainy, Anna, Emma, Mia and Heather – who competed in the Dino Opener meet on Saturday. Considering it was the first meet of the indoor season and the first meet ever for many of the athletes, there were some impressive results.

I was especially pleased to see the camaraderie between the athletes. The JD athletes were some of the most vocal on the sidelines, not only cheering on their JD teammates but also the CALTAF athletes from the two older groups. Thank you also for the many displays of good sportsmanship that I witnessed – words of encouragement to nervous teammates, handshakes at the finish line and the respect shown to both officials and volunteers. As always, the JD athletes were wonderful ambassadors for CALTAF.

Our newest athletes, Nicholas, Aidan, Brent S, Michael, Katie, Ellie, Jessica, Melissa, Lauren F, Emily, Mia and Heather, who were competing in their first indoor meet, are to be congratulated not only for competing very well but also for the maturity they demonstrated on the track. You warmed up on your own, arrived at the start line on time and prepared for your event, cooled down without being reminded to do so, and generally looked surprisingly relaxed and at home out on the track. Well done all of you!

Mia, one of our newest and youngest athletes, had an outstanding meet, finishing 1st in both of her individual events. Mia was 1st of 5 11-year-old athletes in the 60m, finishing in an impressive 9.15s, and 1st of 3 athletes in the 150m in an equally impressive 23.20s. Well done Mia!

I would like to offer a special thank you to Anika Vogelgesang for stepping up and agreeing to fill in for a JD athlete who was late arriving due to the road conditions. Had it not been for Anika’s willingness to participate, I would have had to withdraw the team. Not one to be intimidated by the boys or older athletes, Anika ran a very strong second leg for the team, defending the lead that Max had established. Brent S, the JD Group’s newest athlete with only two weeks of training under his belt, ran a very fast final leg to assure the team of victory. Well done Max, Anika, Matthew and Brent S!

Coach Lou was very pleased that five JD athletes – Emma, Lauren G, Brent, Emily andChase – entered in the 60m hurdles competition, despite having to compete up against older athletes (hurdles was not offered to younger athletes). All of the athletes ran very well. Brent B, took more than a second off his PB to finish 2nd. I would also like to acknowledge Brent’simpressive act of good sportsmanship when he took the time to high-five JD’s female hurdlers just before their race. Chase, Emily, Lauren G and Emma were very nervous about competing amongst the older hurdlers, and Brent’s gesture towards his teammates was well-timed and very thoughtful. Thank you Brent B for being such a fine ambassador for CALTAF and a great teammate!
