CALTAF builder honored

Congratulations to Carol Kyle for being named Calgary Booster Club 2012 Sportsman Of The Year!
(and thank you to both Carol and Doug for CALTAF!)

Imagine 1958, when it was far from hip to run or jog as a form of exercise in Calgary.

Enter young married couple Carol Kyle and her husband Doug from Toronto, a pair of competitive track and field athletes – Carol, a provincial record holder in Ontario for high jump, and Doug, a two-time Olympic long-distance runner.

Together, they created what has become a fixture in this city – the Calgary Track and Field Club.

More than 50 years and thousands of athletes later – as well as countless other track and field contributions – Carol has added to her many awards for volunteerism being named the Calgary Booster Club 2012 Sportsman Of The Year on March 19.

“It’s something that has been overlooked,” said Lawrence King, Booster Club director and the person who nominated Carol for the award.

“All of a sudden, I was thinking of Carol Kyle and her 51 years, that she was overlooked and (this was) something we should have done a long time ago.”

After the couple moved to Calgary in 1958, they realized the only track clubs in Alberta were in Edmonton and Lethbridge. That meant high school students who wanted to excel in track and field had the city championship and possibly provincial championship as their only track meets of the year.

CALTAF, as it became known, aimed to offer more.
