Alex has had a great start to what should be a very long track career!
In Grade 10 Alex placed 6th at High School Provincials in the 1500. He was approached by Christine Laverty, a track club coach with Caltaf, to see if he wanted to pursue his track career and the rest has been history.
At the end of Grade 1, just one year later, (2013) Alex won both the 1500 and 3000m at High School Provincials.
At the 2013 Club Provincials in Sherwood Park, Alex was first in the 1500 and 3000m, setting a meet record in the latter event. He complained the times were too slow… 4:08.35 and 9:08.46
At the Canada West Challenge, Alex representing Team Alberta, placed first in the 3000m and 2nd in the 1500m being out leaned by a team mate. He was very unhappy with the times…
So he headed off to Youth Nationals where he was going to get his chance to run against the best in all of Canada, in his own age group, for the first time! Alex won the 1500m with a PB and placed 4th with a huge PB in the 3000m. For the first time all season he smiled … and rightly so…
- 800m – 1:58.03
- 1500m – 3:57.76
- 3000m – 8:43.61
This has brought us to his Final High School Year… Grade 12…. Alex has continued his winning stream throughout the spring season with his eyes set on the final goal, to once again win both the 1500 and 3000m at High School Provincials and maybe achieve a record.
He is looking good as he decided to race a club meet on May 31st in a distance not always contested in outdoor season the 1000m. Not only did he win this race but also set a Canadian Junior Record for that event.
This week Alex received the track and field MVP from the Calgary Booster Club for 2014 and the top Male athlete at his high school Crescent Heights.
Alex has decided to stay in Calgary and will be attending the University of Calgary in the fall. He has received an Academic Scholarship to the Schulich Faculty of Engineering and he will be able to stay with his coach and continue his track career.
