JD Results from Provincials

My congratulations to the twenty-three JD athletes – Brent Bester, Nicholas, Charlie, Matthew, Brent Stephen, Patrick, Sean, Ben, Katie, Jasmine, Ellie, Maria, Jessica, Melissa, Antha, Chase, Janessa, Emily, Anna, Emma, Madelaine, Mia and Heather – who traveled to Edmonton this past weekend to compete in the Alberta Indoor Track and Field Championships. Among them, they produced some outstanding results.

Here are the highlights:

All of the athletes achieved personal best performances in at least one event, with Brent Bester, Matthew, Patrick, Sean, Katie, Jasmine, Ellie, Maria, Jessica, Melissa, Antha, Chase, Janessa, Anna, Emma, Madelaine and Heather recording personal bests in multiple events.

My heartiest congratulations to our 2010 Alberta Indoor Track and Field Champions: Ellie won the 300m in a personal best time of 43.34s to finish 1st of nineteen midget women and capture the gold medal. Chasefinished 1st of four athletes in the midget women’s 2000m in a personal best time of 7:16.61s to capture the gold medal. This is an especially remarkable feat for Chase, given that she is a first-year midget, who was competing against older athletes. Madelaine finished 1st of thirty-five athletes in the bantam shot put, throwing the shot 7.95m, a PB of 1.69m. Well done ladies! You should be very proud to be Provincial Champions.

Congratulations to the JD athletes who won silver and bronze provincial medals. Chase captured the silver medal in the midget women’s long jump, clearing 4.45m, a personal best of 9cm. In his first 60m hurdle competition, Nicholas captured the bronze medal, finishing in 11.54s. In her first long jump competition,Ellie captured the bronze medal, clearing 4.35m to finish 3rd of twenty Alberta athletes. Matthew captured the bronze medal in the midget men’s high jump competition, clearing his personal best height of 1.40m. In the bantam girls’ med ball throw, Mia, one of JD’s youngest athletes, finished 2nd of thirty-three athletes in the medicine ball throw, with a throw of 4.85m. Mia is a first-year bantam, making her 2nd place finish all the more impressive. Well done provincial medalists!

The most outstanding results of the weekend were accumulated by Emma, who finished 2nd of thirty-six bantam girls in the 150m, 2nd of thirty-one athletes in the bantam 600m, 2nd of twenty-eight in the 800m, 3rd of thirty-seven athletes in the 60m, 4th of thirty-five athletes in the long jump, 7th of thirty-five athletes in the shot put and 7th of twenty-eight athletes in the high jump. Wow! This should earn Emma the overall silver medal in the multiple events for bantam girls, although the overall results are still not available.Emma’s results included several personal best performances. In the 60m, Emma finished in a personal best time of 8.76s, while in the 150m she finished in a PB time of 21.49s. In the 600m, Emma took 1.44s off her PB, finishing in 1:52.20s, while in the 800m she took an impressive 6.92s off her PB, finishing in 2:38.59s. Emma also demonstrated her versatility and strength in the field events by clearing 1.25m in the high jump, a PB of 15cm, and adding another 44cm to her PB in the shot put, throwing the shot 6.59m. Well done Emma! Those are exceptional results.

In addition to his bronze medal in the 60m hurdles, Nicholas placed 4th of twenty-six athletes in the midget men’s 200m, finishing in 25.99s. Nicholas was also 4th of twenty-seven athletes in the 60m, where he finished in 7.73s. Well done Nicholas!

In addition to her gold in the 2000m and silver in the long jump, Chase finished 4th of nine athletes in the midget 1200m. Well done Chase!

Katie had an outstanding weekend, finishing just out of the medals in 4th place in the 800m and 6th in the 1200m. In the 800m, Katie finished in 2:33.47s, a personal best of 7.46s, while in the 1200m, Katiefinished in 4:18.57s, a personal best of 8.65s. Well done Katie!

Jasmine demonstrated how much stronger she is becoming by achieving personal bests in three of her four events. In the 60m, Jasmine ran a PB of 8.69s in the preliminary to qualify for the final, where she finished 15th of thirty-six midget women in a time of 8.71s. In the 300m, Jasmine took an impressive 1.69s off her PB, finishing 7th of nineteen athletes in 45.38s. In the 200m, Jasmine ran a personal best time of 29.32s. Well done Jasmine!

In addition to her gold medal in the 300m and bronze in the long jump, Ellie placed 5th of 38 athletes in the 200m, finishing in 28.03s. Ellie also added another 5cm to her PB in high jump, clearing 1.35m to finish 8th. Well done Ellie!

First-year midget Antha had an outstanding weekend, recording personal best performances in four events. In the 60m, Antha finished in a personal best time of 8.89s, while in the 200m she bettered her PB by 1.22s, finishing in 30.63s. In the long jump, Antha added another 25cm to her PB, clearing 4.16m to finish just out of the medals in 4th place. In the shot put, Antha added an impressive 92cm to her PB, throwing the shot 6.29m to finish 7th. Excellent results for a first-year midget. Well done Antha!

Brent Bester demonstrated that he is becoming stronger by achieving personal bests in three running events. In the 60m hurdles, Brent finished in a personal best time of 12.29s, while in the 300m, Brentfinished in a personal best time of 47.85s. In the 1200m, Brent broke the four minute barrier for the first time, finishing in a personal best time of 3:59.85s, a 6.95s PB. During the meet, Brent demonstrated the qualities that will make him a fine captain in the coming months. He was particularly helpful to teammate Brent Stephen at the high jump, and was observed shaking the hands of his opponents as the event was about to begin. Well done Brent!

Maria had an outstanding weekend, missing the bronze medal in the shot put by a mere 2cm. Mariathrew the shot 8.16m, adding another 10cm to her PB. Maria also ran personal bests in both the 60m and 200m. Maria was observed high- fiving her opponents during the shot put competition. Thank you for being such a fine ambassador for CALTAF, Maria! Well done!

Jessica ran a personal best of 8.62s in the midget women’s 60m, where she finished 12th of thirty-six athletes. In the long jump, Jessica added another 12cm to her PB, clearing 4.14m to finish 8th of twenty athletes. Well done Jessica!

In addition to his bronze medal in the high jump, Matthew recorded personal best performances in three other events. Matthew broke the nine second barrier in the 60m for the first time, finishing in a personal best time of 8.87s. Matthew also took an impressive 2.10s off his PB in the 300m, finishing in 46.30s.Matthew also added another 33cm to his PB in the long jump, clearing 4.62m to finish 7th of sixteen midgets. Well done Matthew!

Melissa broke the nine second barrier in the 60m for the first time, recording a personal best of 8.99s.Melissa also took 1.43s off her personal best in the 200m, where she finished in 29.81s. Well doneMelissa!

Patrick had an excellent meet, achieving personal bests in four events. In the 150m, Patrick finished in a personal best time of 23.75s, while in the 600m, Patrick finished in a personal best time of 2:00.43s. In the 800m, Patrick took an impressive 4.23s off his PB, finishing in 2:49.55s, while in the high jump,Patrick cleared 1.15m, a PB of 5cm. Well done Patrick!

First-year midget Janessa also had an outstanding weekend. Janessa just missed qualifying for the final in the midget women’s 60m, where she finished in a personal best time of 8.75s. Janessa qualified 12th of thirty-eight athletes for the 200m final, where she placed 10th. Janessa finished the 300m in 46.71s, a PB of 1.61s. Well done Janessa!

One of our newest athletes, Brent Stephen, finished the 60m in a personal best time of 9.19s. The coaches were impressed with Brent’s willingness to try a variety of events, despite an initial reluctance. Well done Brent!

In the 60m hurdles, first-year midget Emily finished just out of the medals in 4th place from amongst a field of twenty-one athletes, recording a personal best time of 10.93s. Emily was also 4th of twelve athletes in the high jump, where she cleared 1.40m. Well done Emily!

One of our youngest athletes, first-year bantam Ben, ran a PB in the 150m, finishing in 24.72s, a PB of 2.08s.

Anna demonstrated how much stronger she is becoming by recording personal best performances in four events. In the bantam 60m, Anna finished in a personal best time of 9.83s. In the long jump, Anna added another 13cm to her PB, clearing 3.10m. In the high jump, Anna cleared 1.20m, an impressive 15cm PB. Finally, in the shot put, Anna added almost half a metre to her PB. Well done Anna!

Charlie ran a personal best in the 60m, where he finished in 9.29s. However, what impressed me the most about Charlie this weekend was his warm-ups. Of all the JD athletes I observed warming up, Charlie was the most thorough.

Sean demonstrated how much stronger he is becoming by recording personal bests in three bantam running events. In the 60m, Sean finished in a personal best time of 9.37s, while in the 150m, Seanrecorded a personal best time of 24.64s. Sean also ran a personal best in the 600m, where he finished in 2:08.02s.

In addition to her gold medal in the shot put, Madelaine added another 5cm to her PB in the high jump.Madelaine will be remembered most for her gutsy performance in the 150m, where she finished despite a nasty fall near the start, which left her badly scraped and spiked. Well done Madelaine!

In addition to her second place finish in the med ball throw, Mia was 10th in the shot put, where she added another 39cm to her PB, throwing the shot 6.53m. Mia also finished 11th of thirty-seven bantam athletes in both the 60m and 150m, impressive given that she is a first-year bantam. Mia finished the 60m in 9.27s and the 150m in 23.13s. Well done Mia!

Another of JD’s youngest athletes, first-year bantam Heather, enjoyed an outstanding weekend, recording personal best performances in four events. In the 60m, Heather finished in a personal best time of 9.90s, while in the 150m, Heather finished in 25.31s, a PB of almost half a second. Heather also recorded a personal best of 2:19.22s in the 600m and another personal best of 3:21.94s in the 800m. In her first high jump competition and with little training before the meet, Heather cleared 1.10m. Heather also cleared 3.46m in the long jump. Heather impressed her coaches with her willingness to try all of the events. She was the only 1998 CALTAF athlete to compete in all eight of the bantam multiple events. Well doneHeather!

Congratulations to all athletes. Those are impressive results. It was a good way to end the indoor season (although we do have one more indoor meet on 24th April, after we have begun training outdoors).
