JD Results from Cross Country Provincials

Congratulations to all of the JD athletes – Kamila, Savanna, Maddy, Cole, Carson, Matthew, Allie, Fiona, Shaniah, Alex M, Dawson and  Thibaut – who competed at the Cross-Country Provincial Championships earlier today. Despite chilly, snowy and slippery conditions, these athletes produced some outstanding results. Below are some of the highlights.

Congratulations to JD’s individual provincial silver medalist, Kamila, our individual provincial bronze medalist, Shaniah, our team provincial champion and gold medalistMatthew, our team provincial silver medalists Shaniah, Allie, Fiona and Alex M, and last but certainly not least, our team provincial bronze medalist, Cole. Well done provincial medalists!

I would especially like to congratulate JD’s two youngest competitors, Matthew andAlex M, who both ran outstanding races.

Matthew is a provincial champion, having won the peewee team gold with CALTAF Cheetah athletes Wiktor Liskiewicz, Cole Prete and Evan Vammen. Matthew finished an oustanding 7th of 31 athletes, a particularly impressive feat given that Matthewhad just missed about three weeks of training due to a nasty case of chicken pox. Well done provincial champion and gold medalist Matthew!

Peewee athlete Alex very graciously and bravely agreed to run up with the older bantam athletes so that CALTAF would have a team of four bantam girls to challenge for a team medal. The coaches and her bantam teammates are very happy that Alexagreed to run up with the older athletes because the bantam girls team of Alex,Shaniah, Allie and Fiona captured the bantam team silver medal. Well done ladies – provincial silver medallists!

I would also like to congratulate JD’s newest athletes – Shaniah, Fiona, Alex M, Matthew, Allie, Dawson, Thibaut and Carson – who were competing for the first time as JD athletes. These were challenging races, made all the more difficult by the snowy conditions, but all of the athletes rose to the occasion and ran very well. Well done new athletes! You looked remarkably at ease out on the course.

New athlete Shaniah ran an outstanding race, finishing 3rd in a very competitive field of thirty bantam athletes to capture the bronze medal. An individual bronze medal and a team silver medal in her first cross-country competition! Well done two-time provincial medallist Shaniah!

First-year midget Kamila captured the individual silver medal in the 3000m midget women’s race, finishing 2nd of thirty athletes. Congratulations provincial silver medalistKamila! In that same race, Maddy and first-year midget Savanna looked very strong, finishing 14th and 12th respectively.

First-year bantam Allie really impressed her coaches by finishing 11th of thirty athletes, greatly contributing to the successful bantam team result. Allie ran a very strong race and didn’t look at all intimidated by the older athletes that she was running amongst. Well done provincial silver medalist Allie!

Our midget men’s team of first-year midget Cole to JD graduate Ethan (now in CALTAF’s high-school Distance Group), JD graduate Harrison (now in CALTAF’s high-school Sprints and Hurdle Group), and David Munoz of CALTAF’s high-school Distance Group, combined to capture the midget team bronze medal. Cole ran a very strong race, finishing 15th of thirty-two athletes. Well done boys – team provincial bronze medalists! In that same race, new athlete Carson, who had not had much time to train for the challenging 4000m distance, ran a good race.

In the bantam boys’ race, Dawson looked very impressive, finishing 11th of twenty athletes. In that same race, Thibaut, the newest of JD’s competitors, showed much determination, having not had much time to train for the 2000m distance.

The coaches would like to thank Corrina for coming out to support the team. We hope your knees will allow you to be back with us soon. Thank you for giving up your day to come out and cheer on your teammates.

Congratulations again to all athletes. What a great start to the year!

I will see everyone Monday at 6:15pm on the Fitness Centre Track in the Jack Simpson Gym at the University of Calgary for our first indoor session. See the attached calendar for our complete schedule and the track location. Don’t forget to come dressed warmly in layers – we will be outside for the first ~30 minutes.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend! Robin
