The focus of the Cheetahs program is to introduce young athletes (ages 8-11) to the sport of track and field while at the same time developing fundamentals for the sport and a general foundational level of fitness that will benefit these young athletes in all aspects of their lives. Each practice athletes will spend time building fitness and strength for their running events and practicing technique for their field events. Towards the beginning of a season emphasis will be more on the fitness and conditioning aspect of track and as competitions draw nearer an emphases on technique. There are many different approaches taken to each practice with very little repetition, keeping young athletes interested.
The Cheetahs program is separated into three distinct sessions:
Session one
The first session runs from early September through to the end of October focusing mostly on the cross-country season. Athletes will develop conditioning and fitness while training mostly outdoors.
Session two
The second session runs from January to March and takes place completely indoors. There are usually several indoor meets during this session.
Session three
The third session runs from May through to the beginning of July. This session takes place completely outdoors and contains the most opportunities for athletes to compete in meets.
The Cheetah group meets twice a week usually either at the University, the Foothills Athletic Park, the Glenmore Athletic Park, or Canmore Park depending on the time of year.
Location of Canmore Park:
Crowchild Trail to 24th Ave and go east onto 24 Ave. On 19th Street turn left and drive a few blocks in with the park on your left and the golf course on your right. At the end of the park there is a road to your left. Turn there and you can see immediately the parking lot where they meet - it also has the tennis court and wading pool. It is called Canmore Park (previously known as North Capital Hill Park).
