What a fantastic day we had up at the University yesterday!

Congratulations to all the athletes who ran and thank you to all the parents who helped out, and a special big thanks to Coach Hayleigh who did it all herself as I was working at the finish line all day.

You can read the full results below
http://calgarytrackcouncil.com/2012/DOResults11.htm

I was very happy about a lot of things. We had thirty athletes who competed, that is almost the entire group.

Almost everyone had PBs in the 60m which tells me you are all getting faster. Some people had huge improvements like Caitlin and Sean who improved by about a half second. That’s a lot in a race that only takes 8 or 9 seconds. Talk about the depth in our group: 1st in 14 yr old girls (Meghan), 2nd in 13 yr old girls (Emma) and 3rd in 12 year old girls (Hanna).

The relays were exciting because we had so many teams and I got to watch so many of you run. Our Midget Boys team (NathanK, Sean, Harrison, Lyle) came second to another team from the CALTAF PD group and our Midget Girls (Merel, Erica, Delainy, Caitlin) proved themselves real competitors in with the older girls and women. Our two Bantam Boys teams came second (EthanP, Liam, Matt, EthanN) and fourth (NathanC, Charles, Adeem, Jeremy). Our Bantam Girls teams came first (MIa, Grace, Lauren, Emma) in a great race with Calgary Olympic Track and sixth (Kiannah, Syd, Maddie, Hawaa). The fact that we can put six relay teams on the track confirms for me the depth of the group and the enthusiasm and commitment the athletes bring to the sport. Thanks so everyone who ran!

I didn’t ask too many of you run the 150m or 200m because they came right after the 4×200 relays, still I saw good early season speed from Cam and Mia, NathanC, Adeem, Harrison, Sean and Ben. Just like in the 60s almost everyone recorded PBs.

The 800s were highly entertaining! I watched all of you run through cross-country season and I’ve been looking forward to some racing on the track. The next meet, on January 8, has both a 600m and a 1000m in it so let’s think about what it will take to run one of those distances now. Sahad’s 2:29 was a PB which goes to show what a little (or in his case a lot) of hard work will do for you.

PBs? For those of you not up on all the track lingo PB stands for Personal Best and it means the fastest you’ve ever run. It is one of the ways we measure success in our group. We all see the races on the track and it’s obvious who wins those but as coaches we look beyond that to the effort and improvement shown by each individual athlete.

Not everyone had a PB on Saturday. Sometimes it just doesn’t happen and that’s OK. Some of you, especially those of you going into second year Midget, have the bar set pretty high already and PBs will take an extraordinary effort to achieve. Don’t worry, keep training, I assure you that for the beginning of the season we are in great shape.

I especially want to congratulate the athletes who are new to our group. You survived your first track meet; well done! Saturday was the first time I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching Sydney, Erica, Merel (great relay leg!), NathanC, Adeem, Charles, Jeremy, SImon, Liam, EthanP and last but not least EthanN (great finish in the 800!).

See you at practice tomorrow!

Most of us were up in Edmonton yesterday at the Provincial Championships so let’s wrap up the season with a report from that event.

CALTAF had the largest number of entries of any club in the province (33) and a presence in just about every race that was impossible to miss.
The course was hard, with a single track switchback pathway on the downhill and an unforgiving long hill into the finish. It was what I would call a character builder and I think everyone who ran is a better runner today because of it. Most important was the outstanding effort put in by everyone!

I will cover the results of the Cheetahs and the JD athletes.

In the first race of the day, the Peewee Girls 1700m, Colette Benko was 15th (out of 43) and Emily Stirling was next in 16th.

In the Peewee Boys 1700m, Charles Voglewede was 7th (out of 34),
Jarvis Chantler was 20th and Sam Yardley was 28th.

In the Bantam Girls 2km we had seven entered and we won second place in the team competition. Hats off to the Leduc club who has had a lock on this event for many years. The top finisher from our group was Marissa Stirling, 5th (out of 24) then Lauren Yardley 10th, Grace Hilton 13th, Maddy Lee 15th, Deia Hida 17th, Cam Knowles 22nd and Rhea Foster 23rd.

In the Bantam Boys 2km Ethan Nishimura, in his first competition with the club, was 5th (out of 17) and Matt Voglewede was 15th.

In the Midget Girls 3km Sarah Voglewede ran a gutsy 22nd.

Congratulations to everyone who ran cross country with us this year and thanks for making it an exciting and fun two months for me.

Gareth Hadfield competed on the last day of the PanAm Junior Championships in the 3000m Steeplechase in Miramar, Florida. Gareth took the early lead and then settled into his own pace and rhythm. At this point he was passed by two other athletes. This was great for Gareth, right up until he tripped over a stumbling American athlete and although he tried to gain his balance, his body hit the ground hard. Gareth jumped to his feet to now find himself passed by the lead field and sitting in eighth place. Over the next 1,000m Gareth worked hard to regain his 3rd place position. It was a tough run with the heat and humidity (40C +) and working that hard… When the two lead runners broke away in the final 800m, Gareth found himself with no gear to go to.. they were used up getting back into the race… Gareth had worked hard to get to that position and that is where he remained for the rest of the race.

Gareth, despite all the pitfalls mentioned above still ran a good time and took home a Bronze medal for Canada, Calgary and Caltaf. Outstanding effort and a truly gutsy performance.

Report from Sue Hirst:

This summer CALTAF is delighted to have so many of our athletes qualify for national and provincial teams. In addition to those athletes who have already been mentioned in earlier posts, CALTAF would like to congratulate the following youth and midget athletes who made the Alberta Legion Team and will compete at Legion Nationals in August:

Nicky Charlesworth, Shaunie Morrison, Emily Wilson-Bodnar, Ellie Hirst, Alex Ivan, Bryce Clements, and Adrianne Erdman. Well done athletes!

One of the reasons for the success of CALTAF athletes (apart from all the hard work and training they put in) is the amazing and dedicated coaches, all of whom deserve a big thank you for the work they do. Many of the CALTAF coaches are also very active in the wider athletic community and once again this year several CALTAF coaches have been named to Provincial and National Teams.

Jason Lindsay is the Head Coach for Team Alberta at the 2011 Western Canada Summer Games in Kamloops from August 5-9. This is Jason’s third trip to the WCSG and his first time as Head Coach.

Tara Dressler is one of the Team Managers for Team Alberta at the 2011 Western CanadaGames. This is Tara’s first official Alberta Team position. Previously, in 1997 and 2005, she competed as an athlete at the Canada Summer Games. Team Alberta begins competing at theSaskatchewan vs. Alberta dual meet in Regina on the July 15-17 weekend.

Derrick Johnston is the Head Coach for the Alberta Legion Team at the 2011 Legion Canadian Youth Track and Field Championships in Ottawa from August 5-7. Derrick has previously been a coach at the 2008 Alberta Summer Games and the 2010 Alberta Legion Nationals.

Christine Laverty is the Lead Coach for the Canadian Youth Athletics Team at the 2011 Youth Commonwealth Games in the Isle of Man, UK from September 7-13. Christine has held many coaching positions for Provincial and National teams in her career. Most recently she was the Distance Coach for the Senior Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India in 2010.

In addition Christine Laverty as Chair of the Organising Committee was recently instrumental in Calgary’s successful hosting of the 2011 Canadian National Championships at the newly renovated Foothills Athletic Park. Christine put in many, many hours of work over long months which resulted in a truly spectacular Track and Field event in our city. Calgary will host the Canadian National Championships again next year when they will be the qualifiers for the 2012 Olympics. Be sure to look out for them.

Congratulations to all these coaches who have made such significant contributions to their sport. We truly appreciate all the incredible work they do.

Report from Christine:

It has been an exciting summer for the Caltaf athletes but it will prove to be even more exciting as two of our athletes have qualified to represent Canada this summer at the Pan Am Juniors and Commonwealth Youth Games.

This weekend Gareth earned his way onto the Pan Am Junior Team by winning the Gold Medal at Junior Nationals for the 3K Steeple (see a video of the race and awards here). Although Gareth already had the standard for team selection he was ranked Number 4 in the race and only two would get the honour of representing the country. It was a very exciting race to watch as the lead changed hands numerous times but at the last water barrier, 150 meters from the finish line Gareth was in a close third. The battle maintained all the way to the finish line and they needed the photo-finish camera to determine the 1st and 2nd place finishers. Gareth was the only Alberta male to take home the gold medal honours this weekend and he did it by thousandths of a second. This will be Gareth’s second time representing Canada as he was part of the World Youth Team in 2009.

Adrianne Erdmann traveled off to Langley, BC on June 17th where she ran a 20 second PB over the 2K steeple and ranked herself 3rd in the country which earned her a trip to the Youth Commonwealth Games in the Isle of Mann. This will be Adrianne’s first time representing her country

Caltaf had other outstanding performances at Junior Nationals…

Nikki Charlesworth won her heat in the 100m Hurdles and placed 4th in the Final with times of 14.63/14.79 respectively. Nikki also tied for 6th in the High Jump with a height of 1.60m and 15th in the Long Jump with a 5.15m jump.

Alex Smith placed 8th both in the heats and the finals of the 110m Hurdles with times of 15.21 and 15.43 respectively.

Matt Galea ranked 26th on the starting list had a 16 second PB in the 5K and moved up the result list to the 15th position.

Young Ellie Hirst (still a first year youth) placed 14th in the Qualifying rounds of the 400 with a time of 57.57 and moved up the ranking to 12th in the B Final with another good time of 57.80.

Alex Ivan donned his spikes at his first National ever and placed 21st in the 400 with a time of 51.09.

Well done to all the athletes and their coaches. It was a great Junior Nationals…

I would like to congratulate all of the JD athletes - Nathanael, Eric, Andrew, Nathan, Joel, Patrick, Sean, Sahad, Max, Lyle, Harry, Tyler, Matt, Jeremy Kinnear, Quinn, Janessa, Delainy, Dana, Jill, Anna, Lauren Kruger, Meghan, Madelaine, Nikki, Kirsten, Reagan, Emma, Rhea, Mia, Anise, Marissa, Heather, Kiannah, Caitlin, Hawaa, Grace, Cam, Hanna and Lauren Yardley - who participated in the CALTAF Classic this past weekend. Among them, these thirty-nine athletes produced some outstanding results.Given the rather challenging conditions, particularly on Saturday, I am most impressed that there were fifty-nine personal best performances recorded by JD athletes during the meet - an impressive feat at any time, but especially given the wet, windy and cool conditions. Quinn and Captain Emma led the way, with each recording a very impressive four personal best performances. Dana, Anna, Meghan, Mia, Caitlin, Hanna, Lauren Y, Sahad and Matt achieved personal bests in an impressive three events, while Delainy, Rhea, Andrew, Nathan and Patrick each achieved personal bests in two events. Jeremy, Janessa, Kirsten, Reagan, Anise, Marissa, Hawaa, Nathanael, Eric, Lyle and Harry each contributed to the tally by recording a PB in one of their events. Well done athletes! You certainly rose to the occasion!

For bantam athletes (1998/1999), the CALTAF Classic was their Outdoor Provincial Championships, so bantams were awarded provincial medals in their events. The JD Group can boast that we have eleven Provincial Champions - athletes that finished first and won at least one gold medal during the meet. My heartiest congratulations to Alberta Champions Harry, Tyler, Matt, Jeremy, Reagan, Emma, Mia, Anise, Caitlin, Grace and Lauren Yardley. Among them, these eleven athletes captured fourteen provincial gold medals: Tyler (4×100m, 4×400m), Jeremy (4×100m, 4×400m), Emma (4×100m, 4×400m), Harry (4×400m), Matt (4×400m), Reagan (4×400m), Mia (4×100m), Anise (4×100m), Caitlin (4×400m), Grace (4×400m) and Lauren Y (4×400m). Congratulations Alberta Provincial Champions and gold medalists! Well done!

In addition to fourteen gold medals, bantam athletes captured eight provincial bronze medals: Kirsten (4×100m, 4×400m), Reagan (4×400m), Caitlin (4×100m), Hawaa (4×400m), Grace (4×100m), Lauren Y (4×100m) and Mia (4×400m). Congratulations provincial bronze medalists! Well done!

Not to be outdone by their younger teammates, the JD midget athletes (1996/1997) also had an outstanding weekend. Given that Midget Provincials are not until next month, midget athletes were awarded CALTAF Classic rather than provincial medals. The midgets won a total of twenty medals - one gold, six silver and twelve bronze. Congratulations to JD’s midget medalists: Captain Madelaine (gold hammer throw, silver discus, silver shot put), Andrew (silver 4×400m), Sean (silver 4×400m), Sahad (silver 1500m steeple chase), Max (silver 4×400m), Dana (bronze discus, bronze javelin, bronze 4×100m) Quinn ( bronze 300m, bronze 4×100m), Janessa (bronze 4×100m), Delainy (bronze 4×400m), Jill (bronze 4×400m), Anna (bronze 4×400m), Lauren Kruger (bronze 4×400m), Meghan (bronze 4×100m) and Lyle (bronze high jump).
First-year midget Delainy took almost a full second off her PB in the 300m to finish 8th of seventeen athletes in 49.56s. Delainy also ran a PB in the 800m, and took home a CALTAF Classic bronze medal in the 4×400m. Well done Delainy!

Bantam Reagan ran a personal best 12.70s in the 80m, and left the meet as a Provincial Champion, with a gold medal in the 4×100m and a bronze medal in the 4×400m. Well done Reagan!

First-year midget Anna ran a very strong 800m, finishing in 2:51.00s, a PB of just under 10 seconds. Anna also took more than half a second off her PB in the 200m, where she finished in 31.19s, and ran another personal best in the 100m, where she finished in 14.79s. Well done Anna! Three personal bests and a bronze medal in the 4×400m!

First-year midget Jill had a tough weekend, getting stepped on and knocked down in the 1200m. Undaunted, Jill picked herself up and finished the race, recording a time not that far off her PB. Jill also placed 8th in the 2000m and 16th of twenty-five athletes in the 800m, and was a member of the bronze-medal-winning midget 4×400m team. Well done Jill!

Lauren K finished not far off her PB in the high jump to place 8th and ran a strong second leg in the 4×400m, keeping her team in the bronze medal position. Well done Lauren!

Rhea was one of the few bantam athletes who, despite the challenging conditions, managed to record a personal best in the high jump. Rhea added an impressive 10cm to her PB, clearing 1.10m to finish 19th of thirty-one athletes. Rhea also took almost half a second off her PB in the 80m. Well done Rhea!

Janessa took just over a second off her PB in the 200m, finishing in 29.92s. Janessa was also a member of the bronze-medal-winning midget 4×100m. Well done Janessa!

My sincerest thanks to the many JD parents who were so supportive of the athletes and coaches throughout the weekend. In particular, I would like to thank Anise’s Dad, Anthony Parker, who graciously stepped in and helped coach the bantam girls in long jump, when the JD athletes were split between two pits on opposite sides of the track. I am most grateful to you all.

Congratulation again to all athletes - those are very impressive results. Enjoy the weekend! I will see you all on Monday - please remember that, on Mondays, we begin early at Glenmore Track and end at 8:00pm at Sandy Beach - see below. Robin

I have been warned by the meet director that it may take several days for the Calgary Hershey meet results to be posted. Rather than delay my results email, I will hope that what I wrote down after the meet is mostly complete.

I would like to offer my congratulations to Andrew, Nathan. Jeremy Kinnear, Sean, Sahad, Matt, Nikki, Kirsten, Reagan, Emma, Delainy, Rhea, Dana, Jill, Anna, Grace, Mia, Cam, Lauren Kruger, Meghan, Anise, Marissa, Hanna, Kiannah, and Hawaa - who competed at the Calgary Hershey meet on Sunday. Among them, these athletes produced some excellent results.

The following athletes have qualified for the Hersey Provincial Meet in Edmonton on Saturday 18th June by placing in the top four in at least one of their events: Andrew (4th in the 800m, 3rd in the 1600m), Nathan (1st in the standing long jump), Jeremy (4th in the 400m, 3rd in the 800m), Sean (3rdin the standing long jump), Sahad (3rd in the 800m, 2nd in the 1600m), Nikki (3rd in the 800m), Emma (2nd in the 4×100m), Delainy (4th in the 800m), Dana (1st in the ball throw), Jill (4th in the 1600m), Grace (2nd in the 400m, 1st in the 800m, 2nd in the standing long jump), Mia (2nd in the 4×100m), Meghan (2nd in the 4×100m, 3rd in the standing long jump), Anise (2nd in the 4×100m, 1st in the standing long jump) and Hanna (3rd in the 200m, 3rd in the standing long jump). Well done athletes! Congratulations! That is an impressive list of athletes going to Hershey Provincials, and does not include athletes like Lauren Yardley and Caitlin, who have qualified at other local Hershey meets.

For those athletes who are going to Hershey Provincials on 18th June, you need follow the link below to the Hershey Provincials website, where you will find all of the informationthat you need plus the registration form. Note that you must email or fax your completed registration form to Athletics Alberta no later than Friday 10 June. At the Hershey Provincial meet, you will only compete in the events that you finished in the top four at the Calgary Hershey meet. You should wear your CALTAF singlet at the Provincial meet. Please confirm with me whether or not you plan to participate in the provincial meet. As Hershey Provincials is not a club meet, athletes are responsible for getting themselves to and from Edmonton and finding their own accommodation.

http://www.athleticsalberta.com/programs/hersheys-track-field-games/2011-hershey-provincial-entry-form-information

In addition to the top four finishes listed above, there were many other highlights. Here are my favourites:
