The girls placed 3rd of five teams in a time of 4:41.70s. Jessica ran one of the 200m legs, while Lauren ran the 800m anchor. Jessica andAntha teamed up with CALTAF Power and Speed athlete Jasmine Galey to win the bronze medal in the 4×100m relay. The girls finished 3rd of eight teams in a time of 54.58s. Brent and Tylerteamed up with CALTAF Middle/Long Distance runner Cuauhti Olguin to win the bronze medal in the medley relay, with the team finishing 3rd of eight in a time of 4:16.64s. Tyler was also a member of the 4×100m relay team, but the team was disqualified.

The JD athletes recorded fourteen personal best performances, with Patrick leading the way with an impressive five PBs (100m, 1000m, shot put, 100mH and the pentathlon), Emily achieving 3 personal best performances (80mH preliminary and final, and 200mH), Matthew Schalm recording two personal bests (DT and JT), and Lauren Fridman (1200m), Kendall (200mH), Tyler (300m) and Brent Bester (1200m) each recording one personal best performance.

Other impressive results in individual events include:

In addition to winning the bronze medal in the 100m hurdles, Patrick finished 7th of 13 athletes in the pentathlon. He ran a personal best time of 13.18s in the 100m, took over 13 seconds off his PB in the 1000m, where he finished in 3:15.76s, added another 36cm to his PB in the shot put with a throw of 6.25m, and finished the pentathlon with 1685 points, a personal best of 126 points.

Lauren Fridman finished the 1200m in a personal best time of 4:18.48s, a PB of just under 10 seconds.

Brent took more than 6 seconds off his PB in the 1200m, where he finished 9th in a time of 3:47.00s.

Tyler took more than a half second off his PB in the 300m, where he finished 6th of 18 athletes in 40.27s.

Matthew added almost a metre to his PB in the discus with a throw of 26.32m, and an impressive 1.20m to his PB in the javelin, with a throw of 29.97m. Matthew finished 6th of 14 athletes in the discus and 6th of twelve athletes in the javelin.

In addition to her silver medal in the 80m hurdles, Emily was 5th in the triple jump, 7th in the high jump and 8th in the 200m hurdles, where she ran a personal best time of 32.58s.

Kendall was 5th in the high jump and 10th in the 200m hurdles, where she ran a personal best time of 33.68s.

Antha finished 8th in the 100m and 11th in only her second triple jump competition.

When the Team Calgary head coach needed a shot put competitor, Jessica rose to the challenge and competed in the event.

Despite missing most of the year’s training, Janessa finished 9th of 14 athletes in the 200m.

Lauren Garnett accepted the challenge of the pentathlon, where she finished eighth.

Maria represented Calgary/Zone 3 in all of the throwing events. Her best finish was a 9th in the discus.

Well done JD athletes! I am sorry that I was not there to watch you compete. By all accounts, it sounds as though you enjoyed the Alberta Summer Games and represented CALTAF and the JD Group very well. My congratulations to you all!

Congratulations to Team Alberta for their outstanding performance at the Western Canadian Midget and Youth Championships in Winnipeg this past weekend. The youth team captured the youth championship trophy with 457.5 points. Manitoba finished 2nd with 365.5 points, while Saskatchewan placed 3rd with 360 points. The Team Alberta midget team placed 2nd with 378 points, just 50 points behind Team Saskatchewan who finished 1st with 428 points. Team Manitoba was 3rd with 298 points.

The four JD athletes who were members of Team Alberta - Ellie Hirst, Katie Campbell, Nicholas Buettner and Austin Ost - all rose to the challenge and produced some truly outstanding results. All four athletes did the JD Group proud, with each winning at least one medal in their individual events. Between them, these four athletes contributed 72 points in their individual events to the Team Alberta total, and an additional 13 points as members of either 4×100m or medley relay teams. They recorded 11 personal best performances in their individual events, and captured 3 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze medals. For just four athletes, those are very impressive totals. Well done Ellie, Katie, Nicholasand Austin!

Team Alberta midget captain Austin won a gold medal in the javelin and bronze medals in the long jump, triple jump, shot put and discus. Given the calibre of the competition, that is a remarkable accomplishment. In addition to the gold and four bronze medals that he won in his individual events, Austin ran the 2nd leg for the midget boys’ medley relay team, which finished 3rd of five teams and captured the bronze medal.Austin achieved personal bests in four of his five individual events. In the long jump,Austin cleared 5.55m, a personal best of 36cm to capture the bronze medal. In the triple jump, Austin added another 35cm to his PB, clearing 11.65m to capture the bronze medal. In the discus throw, Austin added a remarkable 4.73m to his PB, capturing the bronze medal with a throw of 29.11m. In the shot put, Austin added more than half a metre to his PB, throwing the shot 10.47m to win the bronze medal. With those stellar results, Austin contributed an impressive 28 points to the Team Alberta point total. Congratulations Austin! We wish you continued success in Ottawa at the Legion National Track and Field Championships! Go well!

Ellie won the silver medal in the 300m and ran the 3rd legs for the gold-medal-winning midget girls’ medley relay team and the silver-medal-winning 4×100m relay team. Elliealso finished 4th of 24 midget athletes in both the 100m and 200m. Ellie ran a personal best of 13.22s in the 100m preliminary to qualify 5th of 24 athletes for the final, where she ran another personal best of 13.10 to finish just out of the medals in 4th place. In the 200m preliminary, Ellie ran a personal best of 27.35s to qualify 5th of 24 athletes for the final, where she ran another personal best of 27.29s to finish in 4th place. In the 300m, Ellieagain ran a personal best, finishing 2nd of twelve midget athletes in 42.12s to capture the silver medal. Ellie ran the 3rd leg for the gold-medal-winning medley relay team, which finished 1st of five midget teams in 4:23.06s, and the 3rd leg for the silver-medal-winning 4×100m relay team, which finished 2nd of seven teams in 51.89s. Ellie contributed 18 points to the Team Alberta total and the two relay teams that she was a member of contributed an additional 8 points. Well done Ellie! We also wish you much success at the Legion National Track and Field Championships! Go well!

Katie finished 5th in the 2000m, where she took almost three seconds off the PB that she had just established at the Provincial Championships. However, Katie’s most impressive performance of the meet came in the 1500m steeplechase, which she competed in without any training in the event. When the coaches decided in which events to enter each Team Alberta athlete, we discovered that we had no midget women steeplechase runners. We threw Katie in without consulting her and, without a word of complaint, Katiecompeted in the rather intimidating and demanding event. Not only did she compete, butKatie walked away with the silver medal, finishing the 1500m steeplechase in 5:40.38s. - an impressive time, especially given that Katie had no prior training other than a brief crash course that head coach Jason Lindsey gave her the night before the event. Needless to say, the Team Alberta coaches were most impressed. With her 2nd and 5thplace finishes, Katie contributed 13 points to the Team Alberta total. Well done Katie! What an outstanding end to your year. Congratulations!

Nicholas captured the silver medal in the 100m, where he finished 2nd of eighteen athletes in 11.82s. Nicholas also ran the 3rd leg for the midget boys’ medley relay team, which finished 1st of five teams in 3:54.05s to capture the gold medal. In the 300m,Nicholas took more than half a second off his PB, finishing in 40.26s. With those results in his individual events, Nicholas contributed 13 points to the Team Alberta point total, while the winning medley relay team that he was a member of contributed another 5 points. Well done Nicholas! An impressive end to a stellar year! Congratulations!

Holiday Monday 2nd August - no session - I will give you a workout to complete on your own.

I am currently working my way through the results from the Alberta Summer Games. An email will follow with those results.

I hope you are enjoying a wonderful summer. Robin

If my math is correct, then I believe the JD Group brought home 9 gold medals, 13 silver medals and 9 bronze medals. An impressive medal haul - well done athletes!

Many JD athletes rose to the challenge and recorded at least one personal best performance during the meet: Nicholas(200m), Matthew Springer (long jump), Alex McDuffie (200m), Abtin (100m), Matthew Schalm (javelin), Tyler(100m), Alex Charlesworth (150m), Katie (2000m), Lauren Garnett (100m), Antha (200m), Lauren Fridman(javelin), Siri (shot put), Rhea (shot put), Mia (150m) and Heather (150m). Several athletes recorded personal bests in more than one of their individual events: Rui (100mH, 200mH), Patrick (100mH, 200mH), Brent Stephen (long jump, shot put), Eric (800m, 1200m, discus, javelin), Ellie (200m, long jump), Kendall (200m, high jump, long jump),Emily (80mH, 200mH), Delainy (150m, 800m, 1200m, shot put), Dana (150m, shot put, long jump, javelin), Anna(80m, 150m), Emma Martin (80m, 150m, discus) and Madelaine (80m, javelin). It isn’t easy with the travel and the pressure of an important meet to compete at your best, so congratulations to all of you for achieving a personal best.

Austin’s very impressive results of two gold medals, one silver medal and three bronze medals earned him a place on both Team Alberta that will represent the province at Legion Nationals in Ottawa in August and on the provincial team that will challenge Manitoba and Saskatchewan at the Western Canadian Midget and Youth Championships in Winnipeg at the end of July. Austin was one of only five midget men and twelve Alberta midget athletes selected to compete at Legion Nationals. Well done Austin!

Ellie’s 2nd place finish in the midget 300m along with her time of 42.15s, which she had achieved at the CALTAF Classic and which beat the 42.45s standard required to go to Legion Nationals, earned her spot on Team Alberta for Legion Nationals in Ottawa. Ellie was one of only seven midget women and twelve Alberta midget athletes selected to compete at Legion Nationals. Ellie also earned a place on the team that will travel to Winnipeg for the Western Canadian Midget and Youth Championships. In addition to her 2nd place finish in the 300m, Ellie was 3rd of twenty-two athletes in the long jump with a personal best jump of 4.48m, 4th of twenty-seven athletes in the 200m, where she recorded a personal best of 27.50s, and 6th of twenty-five athletes in the 100m. Well done Ellie!

There were 28 Alberta midget athletes (16 women, 12 men) selected to the team that will represent Alberta at the Western Canadian Midget and Youth Championships in Winnipeg and four of them are from the JD Group. Congratulations to Austin, Ellie, Katie and Nicholas. I am looking forward to traveling to Winnipeg with you as a coach for Team Alberta. Other CALTAF athletes who will travel to Winnipeg with the team are Adrianne Erdmanfrom the Middle/Long Distance Group, and Alex Bymoen, Allison Stephen and Nicole Squires from Power and Speed. Kendall, as the winner of the high jump competition, was offered a place on the team but was unable to accept.

Multiple medal winner Nicholas earned his spot on Team Alberta for the Midget/Youth Championships by finishing 3rdin both the 100m and 200m. His performance in the 200m preliminary, which was a personal best 24.76s, was remarkable given that Nicholas was still recovering from an earlier and nasty fall in the 100m hurdles, which left him with many deep scratches and puncture wounds from his spikes. Congratulations Nicholas!

Katie’s impressive performance in the 2000m, where she finished in 7:20.93s, a personal best of just under twenty seconds, earned her the silver medal and a place on Team Alberta for the Midget/Youth Championships. Katie also finished 6th in the 1200m and 7th in the 800m and led her team off with a great start in the 4×400m relay, helping to assure them of the silver medal. Well done Katie!

The top performance from the bantams came from Emma Martin, who captured the gold medal in the bantam multiple events on Saturday and the silver medal in the bantam multiple events on Sunday. On Saturday, Emma’s 2nd place finish in the 1200m, where she finished in 4:12.40s, along with her 3rd place finish in the 80m, where she finished in a personal best of 11.12s, her 6th place finish in the discus, with a 1.36m PB of 17.38m, and her 13th place finish in the high jump, earned her 23 points and the gold medal. Emma finished 1st of 42 bantam girls. Well done Emma! On Sunday, Emmaaccumulated 22 points, enough to finish 2nd of forty-seven bantam girls. Emma finished 3rd in the 150m in a personal best time of 20.79s, 3rd in the 800m, 6th in the shot put and 10th in the long jump. Emma also ran the lead leg for the gold-medal-winning 4×100m bantam relay team. Well done Matthew! Excellent results for a first-year midget!

In the javelin, Eric added 17cm to his PB, and his throw of 13.69m earned him the bronze medal. In the 800m, Eric took 4.5 seconds off his PB, while in the 1200m, he took an impressive 11.0 seconds off his PB. Eric also recorded an 11cm PB in the discus. Well done Eric - a great way to end the year!

First-year midget Abtin won the bronze medal in the 100m hurdles, finishing 3rd of eleven athletes in 17.47s. Abtin also finished 6th in the 200m hurdles. Well done Abtin!

Two midget athletes beat meet records, the team captured seven gold, eight silver and eleven bronze medals, and there were 80 personal best performances recorded by JD athletes. Well done athletes!

We had several athletes - Julia, Jane, Josie, Rebecca, Tim, Abtin, Nolan, andLiam - who were competing in their first meet. Among them, they produced some excellent results. I also thought you looked remarkably composed out on the track and at the field event venues. Spectators would never have guessed that you were competing in your first meet. Well done new athletes!

I witnessed many acts of good sportsmanship throughout the weekend. The one that caught my eye in particular was the handshakes and exchanges of good luck at the start line of the bantam boys’ 80m hurdles. Thank you to AlexCharlesworth, Nathan, Sean and Michael for being such fine ambassadors for CALTAF.

I was particularly pleased to see our young first-year (1998) bantam athletes trying some new events this weekend. Heather and Mia entered the hurdles for the first time, while Emma Chong tried the 800m. The bantam boys - Alex Charlesworth, Michael, Sean and Nathan - after considerable persuasion/coaxing by high jump coach Melissa, all entered the 1200m, where they did very well, although several (who shall remain nameless) announced firmly after the race that it was absolutely the last time that they were running a distance race. J

When javelin throw was not offered to bantam athletes, bantams Teaghan, Danaand Madelaine entered the midget javelin competition, where they had to compete against athletes two years their senior. Not in the least intimidated by the older competitors, Madelaine finished just out of the medals in 4th place with a throw of 15.45m, while Teaghan was 6th (13.87m) and Dana was 7th (12.98m). Well done ladies!

I would like to thank the many JD parents who I saw volunteering at the meet. Without your help, this meet could not have taken place and certainly wouldn’t have run as smoothly. Thank you for your dedication and hard work. Thank you also to those parents who worked behind the scenes, some for many months, to ensure the success of the meet. I appreciate the many hours that you dedicated to the cause. Thank you especially to my fellow CALTAF coach Derrick Johnston, who took on the challenging and often thankless job of meet director. Derrick worked tiressly for many months to ensure that the 2010 CALTAF Track Classic was a high-calibre and very successful meet. Job very well done, Derrick! Enjoy a rest - goodness knows, you’ve earned it!

I will see you all on Wednesday at Glenmore for our regular training session. Robin

Congratulations to the nineteen JD athletes - Brent Bester, Austin, Rowan, Patrick Lyster, Alex McDuffie, Jackson, Nathan, Lauren Garnett, Maria, Jessica, Antha, Lauren Fridman, Siri, Delainy, Dana, Anna, Madelaine, Mia and Heather - who competed in the second New Balance Meet last evening. Despite the miserable conditions, there were some excellent results.

Here are some highlights:

Midget athlete Austin had an outstanding meet, breaking one meet record and tying a second. In the javelin, Austin’s best throw was 41.11m, which beat the old record of 32.83m set by CALTAF athlete Alex Bymoen in 2008. Austin’s throw of 41.11m was a personal best by 4.59m. In the high jump, Austincleared 1.50m, equaling the meet record set by Alex in 2009. Well done Austin! An outstanding accomplishment at any time, but particularly given the trying conditions!

Bantam athlete Delainy impressed her coaches by recording huge PBs in three events. In the 200m,Delainy finished in 32.60s, a PB of 6.01s. In the 300m, Delainy finished in 51.85s, a PB of 2.94s. Finally, in the 1200m, Delainy outdid herself, finishing 2nd in 5:03.00s, a PB of 21.18s. Well doneDelainy!

Although still a bantam and having to compete up with the older midget athletes, Dana recorded some outstanding results. In the 200m, Dana finished 4th of 11 athletes in 30.53s, a PB of 1.13s. In her very first javelin competition, Dana won the competition, with a throw of 14.12m. Well done Dana!

Bantam Madelaine also managed to put some pressure on the midget athletes, finishing 3rd of 7 athletes in the shot put, with a personal best throw of 7.98m.

Rowan won the shot put competition with a throw of 8.20m, a personal best of 13cm.

Despite having just returned from a week of sailing with his school and looking a little worse for wear,Brent Bester took 4.02s off his PB in the 1200m, finishing 4th in 3:53.24s. Well done Brent!

In his first high jump competition, first-year midget Alex McDuffie finished 2nd of 6 athletes, clearing 1.45m. Alex also finished 3rd of 6 athletes in the 200m in a personal best time of 27.08s. Well doneAlex!

Maria added another 78cm to her PB in the javelin, throwing 14.09m to finish 2nd. Maria also finished 2nd of 7 athletes in the shot put, where her best throw was 7.99m. Well done Maria!

Despite the weather, Jessica recorded personal best performances in both of her events. In the 200m,Jessica finished 2nd of 11 athletes in 28.52s, while in the 300m, Jessica placed 5th of 9 athletes in 45.81s. Well done Jessica!

First-year midget Antha improved the PB in the 200m that she had established just last weekend, finishing 6th of 11 athletes in 30.77s. Well done Antha!

First-year midget Lauren Fridman won the high jump competition and the 1200m where, despite the windy and cold conditions, she was less than 2 seconds off her PB. Well done Lauren!

First-year midget Siri put pressure on the older midgets, finishing 3rd of 11 athletes in the 200m in 29.32s. Siri also finished 4th of 7 athletes in the shot put, where her best throw was 7.31m. Well doneSiri!

Bantam Anna was not in the least intimidated by the older midget athletes, recording an impressive 2.17s PB of 33.14s in the 200m. Well done Anna!

In her first attempt at the 200m hurdles, Lauren Garnett ran an excellent race, finishing in 33.80s. Well done Lauren!

Mia, one of our youngest bantam athletes, took almost 2 seconds off her PB in the midget 200m, where she finished 7th of 11 athletes in 31.16s. Well done Mia!

Bantam Nathan cleared his personal best height of 1.35m to finish 4th of 6 athletes in the midget high jump. Well done Nathan!

In her first attempt at the 200m, first-year bantam Heather finished in 33.98s. Well done Heather!

Well done athletes! Great results given the tough conditions! I was pleased to see that you all came so well prepared for the weather, with blankets, hats and mitts. I was also very pleased to see JD athletes shaking the hands of the officials at the end of the field event competitions. I know that they were grateful for your acknowledgement of their participation given the miserable conditions. Thank you for being such fine ambassadors for CALTAF.
