Good News Letter - An Update

An update from Barb about the great work that people in Caltaf have been doing:

Caltaf members:

On behalf of the Board of Directors I would like to make you aware of some of the things that people in our club have undertaken for the track and field community in Alberta.

Christine Laverty, who is one of our distance coaches, has been on the board of the Calgary Track council for a number of years ( including President ) and has been a part of a number of initiatives that have benefited our sport.  In this past year, she has been the liaison person for track and field who has been working with the city in order to put together a Calgary bid for Senior Nationals which will be held at Foothills track.  The bid would bring this National event to Calgary for 2011 and 2012 (with the option to take it to 2014).  As a result, the money for this project has been approved by the city and the upgrades to Foothills and its facilities will begin this spring.  Christine sat in on numerous meetings and was a part of the committee that put together the 70 page “bid” book that was submitted to Athletics Canada. We will know within the month whether we have won the bid but regardless, our sport will benefit from the money that has been put into place to upgrade Foothills.

Jason Lindsay, another one of our distance coaches, put his name forward again this year and has been re-elected as the Vice President Programs for Athletics Alberta.  This is a position that Jason has previously held and it has allowed him to bring some new and exciting components to our track meets.  Jason is also on the following sub-committees: Multiple Events Framework, Cross Country, Competitions Development and Track and Field.

Ed Moore, who is one of our Junior Development coaches, is also a part of a number of sub committees for Athletics Alberta.  He is a part of the Competitions Development committee but he also sits on the Track and Field sub-committee and the Multiple Events Framework Sub-Committee.

Jolene Dressler , who is our club administrator, went to the World Master’s Championship in Kamloops this winter.  She had a number of long days volunteering but the information that she gained by being a part of a world class event will be invaluable to the track community in Calgary.

Elisha O’Lain has been instrumental in putting together the Junior High meets.  She recognized that it was a important way to get more athletes involved in the different disciplines in our sport and has worked with the Calgary Board and other jurisdictions in order to make these a success.

The Caltaf community would like to thank all of you for the dedication you demonstrate to this amazing sport.
