Climb and Run For Wilderness

awa-logoAs a kid it always seemed to me more interesting to climb the stairs of the Calgary Tower than to stand and wait for an elevator. What a fun activity, I though, to climb all the way up! Well, the Alberta Wilderness Association has taken my childhood dream to another level (pun intended) with their Climb and Run For Wilderness event. And Caltaf athlete Gareth Hadfield climbed all over that tower. 23 times in five hours to be exact. Check out the results. And Cuauhti Olguin breezed up the tower faster than anyone in 9 minutes and 32 seconds. How long does the elevator take?

The AWA describes the event here and Don Hadfield describes the Caltaf highlights as follows:

CALTAF had a couple great results in the Alberta Wilderness Foundation’s Climb For Wilderness. Competitors either compete in a 1K Run followed by a sprint up the stairs to the top of the Calgary Tower or the endurance event which is based on the number of times you can climb up the tower in five hours.

Cuauhti finished first beating out competitors of all ages in the Run & Climb event completing the 1K run and 525 foot climb in 9 minutes & 32 seconds despite being much younger than many of the other competitors.

Gareth won the endurance event climbing the tower 23 times in five hours equaling the most number of climbs in the open division. His 23 climbs broke his old record of 20 times . He climbed a total of 12,075 feet and 18,446 steps on route to victory.
